AutoSnowCo. the Intro
there isn't really a great place to start. there isn't a well defined center, nor beginning. i suppose that the best way to tell the story is in segments. but which one's first? this blog is gonna be about a 1 man army in america. but that's really misleading, isn't it? i'm not fighting a literal war with casualties and weapons. and i'm not really alone. this blog is about starting up a business in america (and other crap that i find interesting). there're so many dimensions to a startup business that are critical to its survival, development, and success in today's economy. what say i just tell you where i am right now?
i'm heading face first into season 3 of the automaton snowboard company. automaton, based in california, is a manufacturer and brand of high-performance freestyle snowboards. at a reasonable price. since it's august, snowboard sales aren't exactly racking up. most companies use this time to regroup and prepare for the battle in the upcoming season. more capable companies also take their sales force to south of the equator. the force behind automaton is small. just me, a bunch of artists, my suppliers, my friends, and my rider/reps. right now, AutoSnowCo. is preparing to go head to head in battle against much more prepared, experienced, and financed companies. each with their own branding weapon. how can automaton expect to succeed? well, it's written in the script. also known as, the business plan. but also, success for a business is relative. turning net profit is the name of the game. any organization that turns net profit is a business. otherwise, it's a charity. after the goal of net profit, success is a matter of perspective. i will tell you that as of this post, automaton has not turned a net profit. that few mfg companies do within the first several years of operation, is my quick defense. ready on the draw. my 1st goal, the goal closest to achievement, is to have automaton turn a net profit, thereby becoming a self sustaining business. should everything go according to plan, goal #1 will be knocked down by the end of this season.
but one of the 1st lessons of startup business is that things rarely go according to plan.
