Growds Up?
In Shelter (my overall fav surf flick), Nat Young, in typical pro surfer ineloquence, says something like, "the nice thing about getting older is... I want less waves. It takes me fewer waves to stay quite satisfied." Ok, I dunno anything about WANTING less waves, but as I become older I am realizing that it does take fewer waves and powder runs to make me happy. I can remember back when I was a kid, I'd surf every chance I got, for as long as I could. And if it was the day after a dump, I'd be on the mountain from 1st chair to last. That was what made me happy. Now, it has changed. I don't love snowboarding any less. However, I'm becoming aware that I only have to ride a couple hours on a couple days a week, and I'm happy. Part of the issue is that I have 100 times the responsibility now with running a company and it takes up precious shred time. Another part is that my body simply won't handle the abuse of snowboarding everyday anymore. I'm not getting any younger. There is something that does keep me on the mountain all day, when those rare days occur. It's the dork in this photo. This is Cathryn's 2nd season, and she's learning new stuff on her board everytime we go up. It stokes me out to see Cat get all excited about landing her first jump (named the Cat Splat). It's not like I take her through tight tree runs, or through the park or anything I personally like to ride. But riding with Cat helps keep me stoked. Especially when a bump or something sends her cartwheeling. I dunno, it's all changing for me. Whereas I used to like to ride alone so I can progress technically, hike at my own speed, and do the crap I wanna do, now I like to see other people get stoked on shred. Does this mean I'm a grown up now?
