Sitting over miso soup and sushi rolls with Joe and the notorious L.I.Z. last night, Joe kinda threw a reality check on me with a simple statement: I bet you never thought you were gonna be an art dealer. He's right. I never did. We're not making much money selling art, but it's a start. When I was younger, like a decade ago, I wanted to be a travel writer. I like travel. I like literature. Why not combine them? Well, in retrospect, my issue was (and is) containing myself, 'cause often times I get so excited about a topic, I'm not able to sit down and write about it effectively. Go figure. Anyway, last night was
Carnivore, an Automaton sponsored art opening, and I found myself selling art pieces. A bunch of them. Carnivore was my 1st time ever organizing an art opening, and I think it went well. A half case of sparkling vino didn't hurt, either. I didn't get nervous beforehand and was wondering if I should be. Even after spending hours setting up, it didn't really sink in until guests started cruising in and staring at the walls. When pieces started selling, I guess that was the nail in the coffin, and I finally realized that I'm selling art. Thanks to all the participating artists: Joe Polillo, Joe Singer, James Bratt, Justin Lovato, L.I.Z., and Shawn Carney. Thanks also to Daryl Butterfield and crew at Zenbu Lounge. By continuing to work with them and hosting events like Carnivore, Automaton intends to build much needed depth to the art scene in Tahoe. Here's me and Justin looking at people who are looking at our stuff.
